Give A Life: San Enrique Medical Mission, June 25, 2008, San Enrique Gym, Municipality of San Enrique. It was four days after Typhoon Frank wreaked havoc on our country. The Health Committee feared that many of the San Enrique recipients may not show up during the medical mission. Health Committee secretary Malu Jalandoni-Valderrama was also concerned that she may not be able to gather enough volunteers as this was the first undertaking after a long summer break and many of the volunteers still seemed to be on vacation mode. Yet despite these obstacles, 33 volunteers showed up at McDonald’s Lopue’s East, our assembly venue. Moreover, a jam-packed gym in San Enrique awaited us when we arrived at 2:00 p.m. For the first time, we were going to give immunizations for the very costly vaccine, Pneumo 23, apart from the usual immunizations for Hepa-B, HIB and MMR, and deworming. San Enrique Mayor Jilson D. Tubillara was there to greet the Foundation volunteers and to admonish the crowd when it became unruly at one point. Two hours after, the volunteers’ grueling efforts paid off, with 100 beneficiaries for each of the vaccinations given (Hepa-B, HIB, MMR and Pneumo 23) and 225 beneficiaries for deworming-- a grand total of 625 beneficiaries for this medical mission alone! Such a feat would not have been realized without the unflagging support of these 33 volunteers, namely: Dr. Diane Resurreccion-Nandwani (SSA-B Class 1975), Dr. Sandra Aguilar-Montelibano (SSA-B Class 1985), Dr. Janine Perez, Dr. Ruby Garcia, Dr. Marxwin Cebu-Diente (SSA-B Class 1994), Dr. Irene Beñares, Susan Angodung-Locsin (SSA-B Class 1966), Alice Chang-Zayco (SSA-B Class 1966), Virgie Chua-Lopue (SSA-B Class 1969), Bernadette Sola-Sembrano (SSA-B Class 1969), Bingo L. Lacson (SSA-B Class 1975), Isabel Sola (SSA-B Class 1975), Maridel Ordoñez-Gamban (SSA-B Class 1976), Binggay Legaspi-de la Paz (SSA-B Class 1977), Malu Jalandoni-Valderrama (SSA-B Class 1978), Chinggay Garcia (SSA-B Class 1978), Milette Jalandoni (SSA-B Class 1979), Marides Limjap-Yusay (SSA-B Class 1979), Felice Yulo-Teodoro (SSA-B Class 1979), Jarie Jalandoni-Yulo (SSA-B Class 1980), Analou de la Rama-Celdran (SSA-B Class 1982), Rose L. Lacson (SSA-B Class 1982), Mia Jalandoni-Legaspi (SSA-B Class 1982), Cecile C. Ledesma (SSA-B Class 1983), Gina Severino-Regalado (SSA-B Class 1983), Ditas Javellana (SSA-B Class 1983), Ronnali Remitio-Crisostomo (SSA-B Class 1983), Vijet Romualdo (SSA-B Class 1983), Hannchen Lacson-Gonzalez (SSA-B Class 1983), Nining Macasa-Lacson (SSA-B Class 1983), Tina Montinola-Monfort (SSA-B Class 1988), Melulyn Jimera and Concep Bañas. The volunteers were graciously served merienda by the municipal health workers. The group left San Enrique at 4:30 p.m.—weary but extremely fulfilled. This was, indeed, a clear manifestation of the Benedictine dictum “Ora et Labora”—the Prayer and Work discipline that each Benedictine child has been molded in. See pics gallery. |

Give A Life: Sagay City Medical Mission, March 5, 2008. Despite the early morning call (7:30 a.m.) and the 84 kilometer drive to Sagay City, 26 alumnae volunteers showed up at Country Mart in Mandalagan, our usual assembly place for our medical missions north of Bacolod City. The convoy of cheery and garrulous Kolasas left for Sagay City at exactly 8:00 a.m. An hour-and-a-half later, we arrived at the mission venue, the Sagay City Gymnasium. After a short prayer led by Cynthia Claparols-Rodriguez (Class 1966), the medical mission commenced. Prior to the mission date, the Health Committee learned that the City needed more recipients for the Hepa-B vaccine. Thus, Give A Life Project Chairman Dr. Diane R. Nandwani requested Sagay City Health’s Chief Nurse, Mrs. Tilda Gonzaga, to extend the age limit of Hepa-B recipients. In spite of this, only 64 children came to receive the Hepa-B vaccine. For HIB and MMR, 99 and 100 children were immunized, respectively. Doctors Diane Resurreccion-Nandwani and Toni S. Gensoli (Health Committee Chairman) of Class 1975 were joined by their classmates, namely: Annie Abueg-Ascalon, Girlie Lizares-Bagtas, Lani Gamboa-Solinap, Shirley Regalado-Javelosa and Bingo L. Lacson. They had a get-together at the Sagay home of Shirley R. Javelosa right after the medical mission. The other alumnae volunteers for this mission were: Dr. Ceres Baldevia-Gay (Class 1983), Jean Velez-Trebol (Class 1965), Susan Angodung-Locsin (Class 1966), Cynthia Claparols-Rodriguez (Class 1966), Alice Chang-Zayco (Class 1966), Maggie Ledesma-Jalandoni (Class 1968), Betsy Ledesma-Coscolluela (Class 1970), Salou Jugo-Keuls (Class 1977), Malu Jalandoni-Valderrama (Class 1978), Christine Velez-Vargas (Class 1978), Monique de Venecia-Villar (Class 1978), Ria Tongoy-Villanueva (Class 1979), Milette L. Jalandoni (Class 1979), Jarie Jalandoni-Yulo (Class 1980), Mia Jalandoni-Legaspi (Class 1982), Rose L. Lacson (Class 1982), Analou de la Rama-Celdran (Class 1982), Jaye Jesena-Hedriana (Class 1982), and Princess Uy (Class 1998). Administrative assistant Concep Bañas took photos of the mission while volunteer nurse Phoebe Mellizo assisted in extracting the vaccines. Many of our volunteers have already become quite adept at aspirating vaccines. Thus, unlike in the past when we had to rely on the city/municipal nurses’ assistance in aspirating vaccines, we can now count on some alumnae volunteers to perform the said task. While on a mission trip to the Philippines, Hawaii-based Mr. Clyde Kakiuchi of the International Baptist Fellowship, joined us on this mission. He donated school items to the children and keenly took photos of this event. The Sagay Medical Mission ended at noon. The volunteers then proceeded to Cadiz City to have lunch at Jollibee. We were back in Bacolod before 4:00 p.m., weary but once again, enriched with the knowledge that we have just enhanced the lives of 263 Negrense children. See pics gallery. |

The success of this mission, as well as that of previous AMM’s, can be attributed largely to the support of the department heads, supervisors and staff of the TLJMPH led by its Chief of Hospital, Dr. Ma. Give A Life: Bago City Medical Mission. Last Wednesday, August 15, 2007, a group of 22 Scholastican alumnae volunteers met at McDonald’s Lopue’s East before proceeding to Bago City as a convoy at exactly 1:00 pm. They were met by Vice Mayor Nikko Yulo (who was the Acting Mayor of Bago that day) and his Scholastican wife, Jarie, at the impressive Manuel Y. Torres Memorial Coliseum and Cultural Center. The medical mission’s venue was well prepared and thought-out that we did not have any problem with the traffic. The eye-catching signages of the various immunizations we were giving (generously donated by the City of Talisay) and the rope-lined receiving areas for the 3 different immunizations lent an aesthetic appeal to the place. The medical mission began with a beautiful prayer led by Bago Councilor Daydet Somcio at exactly 2:00 p.m. Vice Mayor Nikko Yulo then gave a short welcome message for the Foundation volunteers. The immunizations took place shortly after, with piped-in jazz and 80s music playing in the background—certainly a first in all our medical missions! Another first during this mission was our alumnae volunteers aspirating the vaccines. Thus instead of asking for additional assistance from the Health Office of Bago City, the non-medical Kolasa volunteers felt a sense of gratification by doing the aspirating themselves. See pics gallery. The 23 Scholastican alumnae who volunteered for this mission were: Health Committee chair Dr. Toni S. Gensoli (Class 1975), ‘Give A Life’ Project chair Dr. Diane Resurreccion-Nandwani (Class 1975), Health Committee Secretary Malu Jalandoni-Valderrama (Class 1978), Health Committee Treasurer Elena Valderrama-Fermin (Class 1974), Health Committee’s mother and daughter team, Susan Angodung-Locsin (Class 1966) and Kring A. Locsin (Class 1988), Virgie Chua-Lopue (Class 1969), Bernadette Sola-Sembrano (Class 1969), Pinky Garcia-Locsin (Class 1974), Bingo L. Lacson (Class 1975), Jing Remitio-Ramirez (Class 1975), Isabel Sola (Class 1975), Annie Abueg-Ascalon (Class 1975), Monique de Venecia-Villar (Class 1978), Chinggay Garcia (Class 1978), Christine Velez-Vargas (Class 1978), Japan-based Bola Montoya-Taylor (Class 1978), Ria Tongoy-Villanueva (Class 1979), Jarie Jalandoni-Yulo (Class 1980), Rose L. Lacson (Class 1982), Jaye Jesena-Hedriana (Class 1982), Chole Cuenca-Chua (Class 1982) and Analou de la Rama-Celdran (Class 1982). Immediately after the last child was immunized, Dr. Ferdinand Mayoga , the OIC Health Officer of Bago City, thanked the SSBAFI Health Committee volunteers for rendering free immunizations of costly, life-saving vaccines to the children of the City. The City officials led by Vice Mayor Nikko Yulo and Health Committee Chairman Councilor Charit Gaudite presented a plaque of appreciation to the Foundation through our Health Committee Chairman, Dr. Toni S. Gensoli. The volunteers were then treated to a merienda. Before the group headed back to Bacolod, the Foundation’s Health Committee turned over Flonase, digital thermometers and alcohol pads to the Bago City Health Office through Mr. Joseph V. Aunzo. These items came from the recent shipment of donated supplies from the Order of Malta. For this medical mission, we were able to immunize a total of 255 children: 93 for MMR, 91 for HIB and 71 for Hepa-B. |

Give A Life: Talisay City Medical Mission. Thirty-one (31) Scholastican alumnae volunteered for the Talisay City Medical Mission held last June 27, 2007 at the Talisay City Sports & Cultural Gym. The newly-elected Mayor Eric M. Saratan warmly welcomed the volunteers to his city. A doctor himself, Mayor Saratan appreciated our giving free immunizations for MMR, Hepa-B and HIB since he knows that these vaccines are not only essential to the children of his city but also very expensive. Upon their arrival, the volunteers were surprised to see a beautiful and carefully planned set-up at the gym-- giant signs bearing the names of the services to be given (MMR, Hepa-B, HIB & Deworming) were erected; chairs were arranged in an orderly fashion behind each sign; and ropes were used to organize the flow of traffic. Very noteworthy, indeed! Special kudos to the City Engineer of Talisay City who we learned was responsible for the set-up. We also gratefully acknowledge the support of Ms. Tata Cortez, the City Health Office’s Head Nurse, and the immunization team of Karen Santiago, Roberto Guanzon, Jr. and June Cadigal. The medical mission started with a short prayer, followed by a program presented by the Talisay team. The immunizations and deworming started at exactly 2:00 p.m and ended at 3:40 p.m. The number of beneficiaries served during this medical mission were: 137 for deworming, 73 for MMR, 61 for Hepa-B and 89 for HIB. The City of Talisay presented a plaque of appreciation to the Foundation through Dr. Toni S. Gensoli. See pics gallery. The Scholastican alumnae present during this activity were: Health Committee chair Dr. Toni S. Gensoli (Class 1975), ‘Give A Life’ Project chair Dr. Diane Resurreccion-Nandwani (Class 1975), Dr. Ceres Baldevia-Gay (Class 1983), Dr. Linda Guillergan-de Luzuriaga (Class 1978), Health Committee ‘Super’ Secretary Malu Jalandoni-Valderrama (Class 1978), Health Committee Treasurer Elena Valderrama-Fermin (Class 1974), Health Committee’s mother and daughter team, Susan Angodung-Locsin (Class 1966) and Kring A. President's
Report (July 2003 - December 2004) This report covers the period since the inception of our Foundation in July 2003 to December 2004 which marks the end of this Fiscal year. Like any other maiden organization, we had our share of birth pains. We had to be creative in our desire to introduce the Foundation not only to our alumnae but to the community as well. We solicited P5,000.00 from many of the batches of alumnae of SSA-B in order to raise the initial capital requirement of P100,000.00. But despite the daunting challenges we were faced with, the pioneering group demonstrated its strong commitment to further explore all possibilities to put up the Foundation. Read on... |

Give A Life HIB and DPT immunization and multivitamin drive: Valladolid Parish Church and Valladolid Elementary School, December 10, 2004. Due to a typhoon, this medical mission, initially scheduled for December 3, 2004, was postponed to December 10, 2004. Thus, because of the change of date and the impending Christmas holiday season, many volunteers were not able to join this activity. Yet, inspite of the lack of volunteers, the Foundation was able to give HIB immunization to 72 pre-school students at Valladolid Parish Church, immunize 127 Grade 1 students of the Valladolid Elementary School with the DPT vaccine, immunize 213 Grades 3-5 students with the measles vaccine, deworm 504 students, and give multivitamins to 916 students. Quite a task for an undermanned team! This medical mission was ably coordinated by alumna Mai Magadia-Paltriguera (who has family roots in Valladolid) and warmly supported by their parish priest, their health officer Dr. Nelson de la Fuente, and Mayor Ricardo Presbitero.
